M'Aidez seeks financial transparency in the often cloudy world of artistic finance. It seeks to expose points of precarity as well as privilege. We want to know and share why artists work under circumstances which seldom compensate us fairly. How do you spend your time, and how do you sustain yourself? Furthermore, we are interested in exploring the relationship between contemporary creative practices and the labor market. How do artists traverse the labor market when artistic labor consistently blurs the divisions between work and life?

Toward this end we have compiled a survey of admittedly invasive financial and personal questions. By anonymously answering the survey below you will gain access to a results page and spreadsheet detailing all other participants' anonymous responses, and we encourage all participants to utilize this data. Because the goal of this project is radical transparency, all questions require an answer before submitting. We've gone first, and these questions took us approximately twenty minutes to complete. We recommend having your CV on hand as well as a calculator, but by no means are we asking you to file your pseudo-taxes.

All of the information you provide will be treated with the utmost discretion and will never be presented along with any directly identifying personal information. This is because we do not collect such information in the first place—name, email, IP address, SSN, physical location, browser, and OS are not collected in this survey. Responses are collected and presented with strong anonymity; only a timestamp is used by the system to collate responses. Depending on your ad blocking browser settings you may see ads within the survey; if you are extremely concerned about privacy we would urge you not to click those ads. Finally, this survey is not designed to accommodate artists who are currently pursuing a college education--the contingencies of student finances are simply beyond the scope of this project.

M'Aidez is a collaboration between three arts workers: Compliance Division directors Hannah Piper Burns and T. Nikolai and Naught Collective Central Coordinator of Research and Participation Daniel Mackin.

An infographic exhibition of this data will be presented at Compliance Division on the First Thursday in May (5/7), in commemoration of International Workers' Day and in memory of the Haymarket Affair of 1886.
